The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is one of the largest faith groups founded on American soil, today there are over 3,700 congregations with almost 700,000 members in the United States and Canada. Widely involved in social and other concerns, Disciples support world and national programs of education, agricultural assistance, racial reconciliation, care of the developmentally disabled and provide aid to victims of war and calamity.
Common Characteristics of Disciples Churches:
- Each congregation is self-governing
- Worship services include lay women and men in leadership
- Worship styles vary, some are formal, others informal, but all Disciples congregations observe The Lord’s Supper each Sunday.
- Open discussion of issues is encouraged. Diversity of opinion is common.
- Study of scripture is a lifetime commitment, minds change and faith is continually making new discoveries.
- The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) often serves as a “bridge church” or a common ground for people with diverse denominational backgrounds. Persons who come from other Christian traditions are welcome without suspicion or condition, and their memories of worship and work are respected.
- We are growing in diversity; believing issues of social division, such as race, gender, income, or social standing have no place in the church.
